Elise Barnes is an expert in hemp. Hemp has been cultivated as a textile fibre since time immemorial, and Barnes’ expertise is in designing clothing and homewares made from it.

After graduating from Otago Polytechnic, she worked as a fashion design production consultant, specifically for startups. Her final contract job, as the creative director of Original Canvas – which makes hemp apparel – deepened her appreciation for this ancient and adaptable textile.

Choosing hemp linen for the first product under her own label, Fennel, was a no brainer. “My main motivation was finding a fibre that would be environmentally mindful as well as providing us with some quality benefits,” she says.

“Hemp is nature’s strongest fibre, softening over time. Not only will hemp fabric age beautifully, it has the ability to fight bacteria as you wear or use it, meaning it will remain odour free for longer.”

This makes hemp the ideal fabrication for aprons; Fennel’s initial product line. An added benefit to aprons made from hemp is that they will need less washing than the cotton equivalent.

Barnes’ wardrobe reflects an appreciation for local design, with an emphasis on functional, easy care pieces, ideal for parenting young children in.

Three items I wish I owned

We-ar Sonic lyte organic leggings

As a mum it would be a lie if I didn’t admit that I live in activewear.

I love We-ar’s business ethos. I don’t buy much, but when I do I like to make mindful choices no matter how big or small the purchase is.

Collective Canvas sneakers

The ol’ faithfuls. These shoes are mindfully made. I absolutely love shoes, especially ones that can be dressed up or down. You just can’t beat a crisp white pair of sneakers.

Jimmy D Lux Lisbon slip

I’ve had my previous Lux Lisbon slip from Jimmy D for over three years now, it still has so much life in it!

I love to invest in quality, especially with this tried and true piece. I think my wardrobe would thank me for this fresh injection in ‘Bubble Bobble’ print this summer.
