A look at hemp’s rising stock

Truth be told, hemp has been used in India—in particular in the northern mountainous regions—for centuries. Dr. Neeraj Kumar Patel, Head, Research & Development, Bombay Hemp Company cites hemp as an underdog. “For centuries, people living in the Himalayan states have reaped the benefits of the hemp plant in the food they eat, the clothes they wear and the ropes that they use for their cattle. Unfortunately, the benefits of this plant were lost to the people living in cities,” he shares. It was their close interactions with the people from the Himalayan regions that opened their eyes to the wonders of this crop, leading them to formulate multiple products with hemp.

Is hemp legal?

One of the most common questions about hemp is about its legality. According to Dr. Patel, while scientifically both hemp and cannabis are similar, legally—and logically, they are two different things. “As compared to cannabis, hemp has a very low percentage of THC—the component that’s responsible for intoxication upon consumption. According to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act, consumption of the fruit and flower of cannabis is illegal. However, we use only the seeds, leaves and stems—which is completely legal and safe.”

A hero ingredient

While we’ve only just woken up to the wonders of hemp, there’s a reason why this rich source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants been used indigenously over the centuries. According to Megha Asher, COO & Co Founder, Juicy Chemistry that also offers hemp-based products, hemp oil is one of the few oils that possesses a comedogenic rating of zero. “This means it does not clog pores, making it a skincare favourite. Apart from this, the oil is also rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamins E, C and B3. What’s more, hemp seed oil is also rich in essential fatty acids such as oleic (omega 9) and linoleic (omega 6) fatty acids. It helps moisturise the skin and scalp and also balances sebum production.” Dr. Patel too pegs it as a multipurpose oil that can be used on the hair …….
